Deputy Speaker of the Council of Representatives, Dr. Shakhwan Abdullah, sponsors a workshop on the effects of climate change, and stresses that we are facing a serious challenge that requires the cooperation of all authorities with the international community to confront it.

Under the patronage of the Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, Dr. Shakhwan Abdullah Ahmed, the Parliamentary Development Institute, in cooperation with the Parliamentary Health and Environment, Agriculture, Water, and Marshlands Committees, held today, Wednesday 4/10/2023, a workshop on the effects of climate change in Iraq (challenges and opportunities) in the presence of several ladies and gentlemen MPs and representatives of civil society organizations and those interested in the climate file, a group of studies and research on climate change and plans to increase the flexibility of climate-affected sectors was presented.

 

🔸 The Deputy Speaker, during a speech he delivered, pointed out that climate change is one of the critical issues that threaten food production, rising sea levels, and the risk of catastrophic floods, and adapting to these impacts will be more difficult if radical measures are not taken from now, He added, “Climate change in Iraq represents a real threat to basic human rights. Therefore, we are facing a major challenge that requires the cooperation and solidarity of all authorities with the international community to confront it, the Council of Representatives took it upon itself to legislate a package of laws related to the environment, Iraq’s accession to international treaties and agreements, and the implementation of the national strategy to confront environmental pollution and limit its repercussions.”
