The Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives, Dr. Shakhwan Abdullah Ahmed, received in his official office in Baghdad today, Thursday 24/11/2022, and in the presence of a number of deputies, the chairman and members of the Supreme Committee to follow up on the implementation of the Official Languages Law No. (7) of 2014. The members of the committee are: (Dr. Rahim Hussein Aliwi – Chairman of the Committee, Representative of the Council of Ministers, Dr. Walid Abdullah Fathallah – Representative of the Council of Representatives, Dr. Riya Omar Amin – Representative of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Ismail Jahid Javid – Rapporteur of the Committee), the work of the committee and the legal and administrative procedures for adopting the Arabic language and the Kurdish language in official correspondence between ministries and government departments, the Arabic language alongside the Kurdish language in the Kurdistan Region, and the importance of taking into account the other languages of the components at the level of regions and local governments, were discussed.

The Deputy Speaker of the Council and in the context of his speech stressed that “Arabic and Kurdish are the two official languages of Iraq according to the constitution in Article (4) first, and we will direct to approve the recommendations of the Supreme Committee to follow up on the implementation of the Official Languages Law,” Pointing to the necessity of continuing the work of the committee and direct coordination with the Kurdistan Regional Government to install formats in official correspondences in both languages, as well as providing teaching staff in the Kurdish language and translators specialized in the field of legal texts to translate the texts of legislation and laws in force, and generalizing the Kurdish language alongside the Arabic language throughout Iraq.
